How to Write a Killer Author Bio (With Template)
An author bio is a brief passage that introduces a writer and sums up their work, their authorly credentials, and anything else their readers might need to know about them.
While author bios may seem like an afterthought, or something to fill up the backmatter of your book, it’s actually an unassuming but valuable piece of copy. If done well, an author bio can give you credibility and introduce your readers to your other works.
It can also be used in other promotional or publishing materials, as former Penguin Random House marketer Rachel Cone-Gorham explains:
“An author bio is something that will let readers get a sense of who you are, and is an important part for pitching media and book proposals.”
For this reason, it’s important to get your bio right. Here is a 4-step process for writing your author bio:

Can You Guess These Famous Writers Based on Their Very First Author Bios?
One of my favorite things to do in used bookstores is to pick up old editions of early books by now-famous writers, just to see what kind of packaging their books received when they were just starting out. Turns out that some of the biggest names in English-language literature also began their careers with scant author bios, tepid reviews, and random blurbs! (Okay, some of them were big from the start too, but that&#;s neither here nor there.)

So just for fun, I&#;ve collected the first bios of 30 famous writers below—with names, books, and spouses redacted. Some of the answers should be pretty obvious to anyone with a working knowledge of contemporary literature and recent literary history; others are so stripped-down as to be nearly unguessable. But that doesn&#;t mean it&#;s not worth trying.
