    Gordon starred as Dolly Levi in the debut of Wilder’s play, The Matchmaker, Edinburgh Festivals in and she stayed on as the play transferred to London’s West End and finally to Broadway in She and Wilder became the closest of confidents. Wilder wrote in to a friend: “you are quite right that Ruth Gordon played in a role of mine — just over a thousand showings and she never missed a performance! — but far from having quarrelled [sic] she is my dearest friend and she and Garson and < having > dinner with me tonight.”

    The play has a long and colorful history. John Oxenford’s one-act farce A Day Well Spent had been extended into a full-length play entitled Einen Jux will er sich machen by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy in
