John Quincy Pugh, Jr., age 101, of Asheboro died Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home. Mr. Pugh was born in Greensboro on October 12, 1913 to John Q. Pugh, Sr. and Alice Davidson Pugh. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during WWII. John was the founder of Pugh Oil Company and retired after 35 years of service. He was a member of Asheboro United Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Hill Pugh and 5 sisters and 1 brother. He is survived by his sons, Richard K. Pugh and wife Betty of Asheboro, Alan V. Pugh and wife Mary Joan of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Ronnie Pugh and wife Teresa, Doug Pugh and wife Ruth, Steve Pugh and wife Tammy, Mike Pugh, Julian Pugh, and Worth Pugh; 11 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; brother, David Pugh of Lexington; and 4 half brothers. In the Acknowledgments Charles Peterson and Brian Q. Cannon note that they began the early form of what would eventually become *The Awkward State of Utah* in 1994—hoping to complete the work by 1999. Life, of course, gets busy and they shelved their project until 2011, when they again began chipping away at it. With another four years of added and updated scholarship, Peterson and Cannon completed *The Awkward State of Utah* in 2015.
