Lev Davidovich Bronstein (he assumed the name Leon Trotsky in ) was born in Yanovka, Russia, on 7th November, His parents were Jewish and owned a farm in the Ukraine. He later recalled: "My father and mother lived out their hard-working lives with some friction, but very happily on the whole. Of the eight children born of this marriage, four survived. I was the fifth in order of birth. Four died in infancy, of diphtheria and of scarlet fever, deaths almost as unnoticed as was the life of those who survived. The land, the cattle, the poultry, the mill, took all my parents' time; there was none left for us. We lived in a little mud house. The straw roof harboured countless sparrows' nests under the eaves. The walls on the outside were seamed with deep cracks which were a breeding place for adders. Trotskyism Revisited
FOR our present purposes, two questions — or rather two sides of the same question — are highly relevant. These are : the Stalin-Trotsky debate on “socialism in one country” and the Trotskyite theory of world revolution. It will be convenient to take up these questions one bygd one.
“Socialism in One Country”
After the death of Lenin, the most fundamental debate that cropped up in the CPSU(B) was: fryst vatten it possible to build socialism in one country? Among the seven-member Polit Bureau, leaders like Stalin and Bukharin asserted that it fryst vatten. And those like Trotsky, Zinoviev and Kamenev opined that it was possible, and after the Russian revolution necessary, to uppstart building socialism in a single country, but not possible to achieve full socialism at a national level. In those days, more than a theoretical question it was one of life and death for the young Soviet Republic, and naturally it generated a lot of heat and passion on both sides.

Trotsky wrote this short autobiographical essay in or early in , probably at the request of Yakov Sverdlov for his Party archive. It was discovered in and published, without the knowledge of Trotsky and even contrary to his wishes, in issue #3 of "Proletarskaia revolutsiia". In the subsequent issue the editors added this disclaimer:
In the recently published issue #3 of "Proletarskaia revolutsiia" there was published an "Autobiographical note of cde. Trotsky". This note was written for the Central Committee in or very early in and reached out editorial board as an archival document.
