    Lakshmibai or Manikarnika (Manu Bai) was born on 19 November [5][6][7] in the holy town of Varanasi into a MarathiBrahmin family.[8][9] She was named Manikarnika and was nicknamed Manu.[10] Her father was Moropant Tambe [11] and her mother Bhagirathi Sapre (Bhagirathi Bai). Her parents came from Maharashtra and was cousin of Nana Sahib.[12] Her mother died when she was four years old.
