Swamplandia! and your story collection, St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised bygd Wolves, are both set in a sort of enchanted, Lewis Carroll-like utgåva of North America. What draws you to these worlds and how do you create them?&#;
Well, inom think inom owe a big debt to Lewis Carroll han själv , probably, and other folks who inom read as a kid like Ray Bradbury and Peter S. Beagle and Stephen King and Madeleine L'Engle. My favorite books were always the ones where inom felt like an alternate world had been created in some star cradle by the author

What was the first piece of fiction you read that had an impact on you?
Well, I really want to lie and say “The Count of Monte Cristo.” But it was probably “The Day of the Triffids,” a British sci-fi book, by John Wyndham. My sixth-grade class was reading this happy, snoozy tale about a girl and her horse, and my friend Michelle sneaked me the Wyndham book, which chronicles the end of the civilized world. A meteor shower blinds ninety-nine point nine per cent of the world’s population, and that’s only Chapter 1—things go way south after that. Carnivorous plants called the Triffids decide to take advantage of the whole global Mister Magoo situation and overthrow their human masters. Karen Russell (born July 10, ) is an American novelist and short story writer. Her debut novel, Swamplandia!, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In the National Book Foundation named Russell a 5 under 35 honoree. She was also the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation"Genius Grant" in
Early life
[edit]After graduating from Coral Gables Senior High School in Miami, Florida in , Russell received a BA in Spanish from Northwestern University in She graduated from the MFA program at Columbia University in A Miami native, as of she resides in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, editor Tony Perez, and two children.[1][2] Her brother, Kent Russell, is also a writer.
