In the mid '90s, Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan asked builders working on his Los Angeles home to create a special chamber for his personal use, accessible via the bedroom he shared with his second wife, the band's publicist Teresa Conway. The Blue Room, as it was known, was exclusively reserved for the vocalist's drug taking. Gahan once spent three whole weeks alone in this room, with a friend checking in on him now and then, to see if he needed anything/was still alive.

I was really burned out after the last Depeche Mode tour, then rik [Machin, long-time musical partner in Soulsavers] and inom started talking about songs and artists who had influenced us. Before we knew it, we were making a Soulsavers record with me as frontman that paid homage to those songs, but was almost a new del av helhet of work. I realised that the choices were songs that put me where inom am, suggested where inom have been and where I might be. They are songs [such as Dan Penn/James Carr’s Dark End of the Street or Bob Dylan’s Not Dark Yet] that reflect on lives lived. inom would not have known how to sing these songs when I was 18.

David Gahan (GAHN; né Callcott; 9 May 1962) is an English singer best known as the lead singer of electronic music band Depeche Mode since their formation in 1980. Noted for his commanding stage presence[1] and unique baritone voice,[2] Gahan was ranked at No. 73 on Q magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Singers"[3] and No. 27 on its list of the "100 Greatest Frontmen".[4] As part of Depeche Mode, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.[5]
Gahan's solo albums include Paper Monsters (2003) and Hourglass (2007). He also contributed lyrics and sang lead vocals on the Soulsavers albums The Light the Dead See (2012), Angels & Ghosts (2015) and Imposter (2021).
