    Hellmuth Walter(26 August in Wedel near Hamburg &#; 16 December in Upper Montclair, New Jersey) was a German engineer who pioneered research into rocket engines and gas turbines. His most noteworthy contributions were rocket motors for the Messerschmitt Me , Bachem Ba , Henschel Hs, Messerschmitt "Enzian", Henschel Hs "Schmetterling"and some early version of Messerschnmitt Me, so-called Starthilfe jettison able rocket propulsion units used for a variety of Luftwaffe aircraft during World War II, and a revolutionary new propulsion system for submarines known as air-independent propulsion (AIP).

    Walter was developing submarine engines, he was also applying his ideas to rocketry. The high pressure gas mixture created by the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide could not only be used in a turbine, but if simply directed out of a nozzle, created considerable thrust.

    Hellmuth Walter's manufacturing capability at the close of WWII included a number of factories, research and development facilities and motor testing units located around Germany. The headquarters were in Kiel, close to the sea, where Walterwerke were engaged on advanced and detailed work on developing a new type of submarine powered by Walter's peroxide motor.

    Walterwerke had researched and developed an extra-ordinary range of uses for the peroxide motor, from jet assisted take-off packs, through motors for aircraft and airborne missiles, to remotely controlled vehicles, bomb, mine and torpedo devices and a range of high speed boats and submarines.     Hellmuth was born on 26 August to Louise and Ludwig Walter, who had a painting business. With the support of his parents, Hellmuth left school in with a desire to become a naval engineer, and on 12 April took up a post as a machinist trainee in the Hamburger Reiherstieg shipyard.

    Walter worked closely with piston steam engines, diesels and marine turbines. However, he realised that the practical work he had embarked upon would also need a solid grounding in the theoretical aspects of engineering, and in the Spring of he enrolled in a course in mechanical engineering at the Hamburg Technical Institute.

    On 20 February , he left the Technical Institute to begin working at the Stettiner Maschinenbau AG Vulcan, as a marine turbine engineer.

    It was during this time working with turbines, that Walter began to formulate his ideas about more efficient methods of propulsion. Rather than rely on external sources to produce steam for the turbine, Walter reasoned that the che
