The Copa João Havelange finals was the final two-legged match that determined the winner of the Copa João Havelange, the 45th season of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Vasco da Gama won the championship for the fourth time by defeating São Caetano 4–2 (aggregate score).
Vasco da Gama, for the Blue Module, and São Caetano, for the Yellow Module, contested the final. The São Paulo club, who reached the final as the competition surprise after winning expressive Brazilian soccer clubs, had Adhemar striker who scored 22 goals, also a competition surprise. Fifteen years ago I spent a few days working with a team from the BBC current affairs programme Panorama. They had decided to come to Brazil after doing an interview in Switzerland with then-Fifa president Joao Havelange.
Asked about the state of the domestic Brazilian game, Havelange had replied that it was in good health and challenged them to go and see for themselves. And so they did, and arrived at an especially turbulent moment.
The big Rio teams were at war with the local federation, and in protest they were not turning up for matches. Tickets were sold, there were some fans in the stands, there was a referee ready to blow his whistle - and no players.

The Brazilian championship 2000 was organized by "Clube dos 13" instead of the National Federation (CBF) due to legal complications and it was named Copa Joao Havelange. This special tournament was contested by 116 teams divided in groups followed by a knockout stage. Vasco Da Gama won the title defeating Sao Caetano in the final (1-1 and 3-1), counting on the goals of Romario, Juninho Pernambucano and Jorginho Paulista. The top scorer of the season was Adhemar (Sao Caetano) with 22 goals.
