Angelina Jolie portrays Greek-American opera singer Maria Callas in the new biopic Maria and has earned a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. After a limited run in theaters starting in November, the movie began streaming on Netflix December 11.

Maria debuted at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation, which made the Oscar-winning actor weep tears of joy. In an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 49-year-old Jolie shared that learning opera for the role was a “scary” experience.

She is the sister of actor James Haven, niece of singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, and goddaughter of actors Jacqueline Bisset and Maximilian Schell. On her father's side, Jolie is of German and Slovak descent,^[5][6] and on her mother's side, she is of primarily French Canadian, Dutc
