Last week, year-old Yeka Onka won the first ever season of Nigerian Idol. She has been described by some as an African Whitney Houston. (Were hoping, the Whitney of the 80s and 90s and not today.)
Born Onyekachi Gilbert Onwuka, Onkas win didnt komma easily. She was twice rejected from Nigerian Idol auditions in Enugu and Calabar. Finally, she journeyed to Lagos and was accepted at her third audition.

Sensational Nigerian artist now turned gospel musician ONYEKACHI Elizabeth Gilbert Onwuka, better known as Yeka Onka has recounted how she switched from singing worldly songs to gospel songs.
She recounted her transitions from her secular music into her new found love in gospel music. She disclosed in an interview with The Pleasures Magazine, she disclosed that she went on a three months retreat, prayed, and fasted on the mountain top in order to hear from God.

Nigerian Idol Yeka Onka sets date for debut single
Yeka Onka, winner of the first ever Nigerian Idol will light up the Industry Nite stage at the Oriental Hotel on 21 September, The songbird is billed to launch her professional career with the release of her highly anticipated brand new single, ‘Follow You’. This single will be the first to be launched from her upcoming album.
