Deputy Nazir Ahmad is a pioneer in many fields: he is the first Urdu novelist and also the first visionary who created a respectable storehouse of literature for women. He is also the person who visualized a manifesto for feminism, apart from translating the Indian Penal Code into Urdu called Taazeerat-e-Hind for the first time. This book was too well received both by the British administration and judiciary.
Nazir Ahmad was born on December 06, 1836, in Bijnaur district of Uttar Pradesh. He received his early education from his father, Maulavi Saadat Ali, who was himself a teacher. Following this, he joined Delhi’s Aurangabadi madrasa where he was taught by Maulavi Abdul Khaliq. During his stay in Delhi, he used to live in a mosque located in Punjabi Katra. During those days, students had to collect their daily meals from different families in the locality. Education - He learned Persian and Arabic from his father who was a teacher in a small town near Bijnore. - In 1842, his father took him to study beneath Maulvi Abd ul- Khaliq at the Aurangabadi Mosque in Delhi. - In 1846, Nazir Ahmad had the opportunity to enrol at Delhi College and studied there until 1853. His religious and social reforms - He was a leading proponent of Muslim women�s education. - He was among the few who were aware of the problems and sufferings of Indian Muslims during those critical decades when Muslim society was in a flux. - Through his novels, he sought to eradicate social evils inherent in Muslim society, particularly those caused by ignorance, illiteracy and frustration.

Maulvi Nazir Ahmad Dehlvi, also known as Deputy Nazir Ahmad, was an Urdu novel writer, social and religious reformer, and orator. Even today, he is best known for his novels, he wrote over 30 books on subjects such as law, logic, ethics and linguistics.[1]
His famous novels are Mirat-ul-Uroos, Tobat-un-Nasuh, and Ibn-ul-waqt.
He also translated the Qur’an into Urdu.
Early life and upbringing
[edit]Nazir Ahmad was born in 1831 to a family of scholars in Rehar, Bijnor District, U.P., India. His father, Saadat Ali Khan, was a teacher at a religious seminary (madrassa). Until the age of nine, he was home-schooled in Persian and Arabic. He then studied Arabic grammar for five years under the guidance of Deputy Collector Bajnor, Nasrallah Saheb.[2]
