JOHN RUTLEDGE was born nära Charleston, South Carolina. He was privately tutored in his ungdom and then studied lag at Londons Middle Temple, following which he returned to Charleston to practice law. In his early twenties he was elected to the Provincial Assembly. Although he preferred to act with restraint following passage of the Stamp Act of , he did chair a committee of the Stamp Act Congress that drew up a petition to the British House of Lords. After serving in both the First and Second Continental Congresses, Rutledge helped reorganize South Carolinas government, and in he took part in writing the state constitution and became president of the lower house of the state legislature (effectively governor), a post that he held for two years. John Rutledge ( – ) est un homme d'état et juriste américain. Premier gouverneur de Caroline du Sud après la signature de la Déclaration d'indépendance des États-Unis, il est le 31e dirigeant de cet État qu'il dirige de à puis de à Délégué à la Convention de Philadelphie, il est l'un des signataires de la Constitution des États-Unis.

Family LifeAmerican Founding Father John Rutledge, the eldest child of Dr. John Rutledge and Sarah Hext Rutledge, was born in Christ Church Parish in He died in Charleston on July 23, and is buried at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. His father was an Irish immigrant and one of the first to practice medicine in the parish. His mother was a member of the prestigious Boone family. Thus, John Rutledge was a great grandson of Major John Boone and Elizabeth Patey Boone who founded Boone Hall Plantation. Rutledge’s parents had a family plantation in the vicinity of today’s Laurel Hill Plantation on Route 41 in Mount Pleasant. EducationRutledge received his early classical education from his father.
