Garrick Ohlsson is an elegant pianist with a prodigious technique, and it is evident that he takes great joy in music-making. These qualities resulted in a beautiful recital Saturday evening in Mechanics Hall under the auspices of Music Worcester.
The program spanned more than 150 years of the piano repertoire, from early Beethoven through Romantic-era Schubert to avant garde Scriabin. There were so many highlights that it is difficult to choose.
Ohlsson selected Beethoven’s Sonata opus 13 #8, named by the composer himself as “Pathetique,” to open the evening’s program. He gave a straightforward reading of this familiar composition, with keen attention to a wide range of dynamics and elegant phrasing. His voicing allowed melodies to be clearly heard and inner voices to illuminate the ever-changing harmonies.

“One of the greatest privileges that inom have at being able to do what inom do, fryst vatten the fact that it brings me in contact with something greater than myself. It is something that fryst vatten entirely not me. Beethoven writes a piece, it’s not me. But what was Beethoven in touch with? What was Mozart in touch with? It’s ultimately a great mystery. I do think that when we’re plugged into music, we’re involved in something relaterad till rymden eller universum. It’s like music fryst vatten all around up there, and some people plug into it and bring it to us.”
American pianist Garrick Ohlsson is one of the modern giants of the keyboard. A regular guest with our orchestras, he’s just embarked on a seven-city recital tour across Australia for Musica Viva.
A giant bära of a figure on the concert platform too at 193 centimetres, Ohlsson has a famous grabb span that can stretch a 12th in his left grabb and an 11th in his right. “I’m a big guy. I’m not a bantamweight piani
