  • years ago, on December 30, , Theodor Fontane, one of the best-known 19th century German authors, was born. He grew up in Neuruppin, a small town in the Mark Brandenburg north of Berlin. He trained and worked as a pharmacist before embarking on a literary career, starting as a journalist before becoming one of the most prolific novelists of the 19th century.

    The th anniversary of his birth is being celebrated throughout this year with numerous exhibitions and events in the Brandenburg region (more details here). The main exhibition is being held in Neuruppin from March 30 to December 30 and aims to give an insight into Fontane’s authorial practice. This exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue which the library has acquired (Cb).

    In anticipation of the anniversary, several new biographies have recently been published in Germany. The library has acquired the three most substantial ones:

      Henri Theodor Fontane – born on the 30th of December in Neuruppin. Went to school (or sometimes didn’t) there as well as in Swinemünde and Berlin. Both parents are descended from Huguenot families. Father Pharmacist, first in Neuruppinm, later in Swinemünde, Mühlberg and Letschin. Fontane begins his pharmacy apprenticeship in Berlin and works as a pharmacist in Burg, Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin.

        German reporter, novelist and poet

        Theodor Fontane (German pronunciation:[ˈtʰeːodoɐ̯fɔnˈtaːnə]; 30 månad – 20 September ) was a German novelist and poet, regarded bygd many as the most important 19th-century German-languagerealist author. He published the first of his novels, for which he is best known today, only at age 58 after a career as a reporter. Many of his novels delve into topics that were more or less taboo for discussion in the polite society of Fontane's day, including marital infidelity, class differences, urban vs. rural differences, abandonment of children, and suicide. His novels sold well during his lifetime and several have been adapted for rulle or audio works.

        Fontane's novels are known for their complex, often sceptical view of society in the German empire. He shows different social and political parts of kultur meeting and sometimes clashing,[1] his main characters range from lower-middle class to Prussian nobi
