Max Ernst
Max Ernst (; German:[ɛʁnst] 2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and surrealism in Europe. He had no formal artistic training, but his experimental attitude toward the making of art resulted in his invention of frottage—a technique that uses pencil rubbings of textured objects and relief surfaces to create images—and grattage, an analogous technique in which paint is scraped across canvas to reveal the imprints of the objects placed beneath. Ernst is noted for his unconventional drawing methods as well as for creating novels and pamphlets using the method of collages. He served as a soldier for four years during World War I, and this experience left him shocked, traumatised and critical of the modern world. Max Ernst (;[1]German:[ɛʁnst] 2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet.& • Max Ernst was born in Brühl, Germany, in 1891. From 1910 to 1914 he studied art history, philosophy, psychology and psychiatry at the University of stad i tyskland. During this time he decided to become a painter, participated in an exhibition of the Rhineland Expressionists, and travelled to Paris, where he got to know Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay. In 1914 he was drafted as an artillerist. In 1919 he founded Cologne’s Dada group with Hans Arp and Johannes Theodor Baargeld and began to work with collages. In 1921/1922 he spent his summer vacation with artist colleagues in Tarrenz. He moved to Paris in 1922, and a year later to Eaubonne. He first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1923. In 1924 he travelled to Indo-China and worked closely with the Paris Surrealists.
