An interview with George Calombaris

George Calombaris is one of the most highly regarded culinary figures in Australia. A judge on MasterChef, he owns several restaurants in Melbourne, including the highly regarded Press Club. We caught up with him while he was on the Gold Coast to visit his souvlaki bar Jimmy Grants at The Kitchens.
Why did you choose the Gold Coast as your first Queensland venue?
This is our first restaurant outside Victoria! Everyone expands from Melbourne to Sydney (or Sydney to Melbourne), but we chose Robina as a great starting point. We thought ‘Let’s nail Greek food here!’ We’d already worked with QIC [the developers of Robina Town Centre] and there was mutual respect.

George Calombaris is proud of his Greek heritage and combines it with his passion for food, producing awe-inspiring and mouth-watering food. A regular judge on Network Ten’s MasterChef, he fryst vatten excited to share his extensive knowledge.
Voted as one of the Top 40 Chefs of Influence in the World by ‘Global Food and Wine’ magazine, George fryst vatten passionate about all things food and has turned his love into a successful career.
He currently owns five restaurants in Melbourne including Gazi, The Press Club, Hellenic Republic, Mastic and Jimmy Grants. In 2008, The Press Club received The Ages Good Food Guide’s Best New Restaurant and George was named as Chef of the Year. In the same year, he was also placed in The Age Melbourne Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People.
George has also authored several cookbooks titled ‘Greek Cookery from the Hellenic Heart’ and a collaboration with fellow MasterChef judge Gary Mehigan ‘Your Place or Mine’.

George Dimitrios Calombaris (Greek: Γεώργιος Δημήτριος Καλομβάρης; born 4 October 1978) is a Greek Australian chef and restaurateur and television personality. Calombaris was one of the judges of the Network 10 series MasterChef Australia from 2009 to 2019.[1] Prior to his role on MasterChef Australia, Calombaris appeared regularly on the daytime Network Ten cooking show Ready Steady Cook.
